Prior to becoming a freelance writer in 1984, I was an in-house writer for the Allen-Bradley Company and the Wisconsin Telephone Company (then part of the Bell System) for about seven years. In these positions, I was primarily responsible for video and audiovisual communications but also wrote many brochures, sales proposals, and executive speeches. As a freelancer, I have written for more than fifty companies and organizations (Clients), representing a wide range of products and services, from air travel to X-ray machines. Content diversity has made me more creative and broadened and deepened my understanding of important initiatives such as problem-solution selling, statistical process control, and customer satisfaction. As evidence of my overall project management and visual skills, I have also written, produced, and directed a variety of videos and public service announcements and have taken numerous print pieces from concept to completion. My method has remained constant: 1) Understand the audience; 2) Identify objectives; 3) Research content; 4) Create an approach; and 5) Write as clearly and concisely as possible. Interviewing is essential to what I do, and I have conducted hundreds of interviews (many on-camera) with personnel ranging from scientists and engineers to chief executive officers and safety managers and including physicians, quality managers, insurance professionals, and other specialists. Many clients have trusted me to interview their customers directly because they know I understand how to conduct myself professionally in furtherance of the client's objectives. Over the years, I have won many awards, including an International Television Association Golden Reel and a Best in the Nation (presented by the National Association of Insurance Communicators). I give every project my best and enjoy helping people create interesting and effective communications.
