"These complex negotiations involved California, Nevada, the federal government, and the         Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, and led to a plan designed to manage the Truckee River resource more responsibly," Erwin explained. "Right now, about 36,000 currently flat-rate residences are slated for new meters and we're putting in all Badger® products."

Homes in the TMWA area generally do not have basements, so meters are housed in curbside pits.

Occasional below-freezing temperatures require meters and associated equipment and piping to be placed at least three feet below grade to be under the frost line. "It's a huge job," Erwin said.

Erwin also pointed out that existing meters older than 10 years were being replaced. "Some of these old, non-Badger meters are registering so poorly, we think we'll increase revenues by about $250,000 per year just by installing new Badger meters."
