Permanent Hair Colors And Liquid Lighteners All permanent hair colors and liquid lighteners contain one of the following necessary active ingredients: ammonium hydroxide (the most common) or monoethanolamine (MEA). When mixed with developer, these ingredients lighten hair and open the hair shaft so colors can penetrate deeper. Ammonia is the most effective in achieving the high levels of lift required by today's hair coloring products. Ammonia has a sharp odor, but hair color products that use ammonia contain only between 0.8% and 1.2%, when applied to the hair. At these low levels, the ammonia vapor is not hazardous although some may find its odor mildly unpleasant. Developers Developers are mixed with semi-permanent and permanent products to activate hair colors, remove pigment, and make the shaft more receptive to coloration. The main ingredient in developers is hydrogen peroxide. The amount of hydrogen peroxide present in a salon product is listed by volume on the label. Greater volume numbers indicate higher hydrogen peroxide percentages...
